Giving

“All things come from you, O Lord.”

“And of your own have we given you.”

Tithing and almsgiving are about community solidarity in the bonds of love; tithing manifests the solidarity of the church body, and almsgiving manifests the solidarity of humanity in God’s image. More fundamentally, tithes and almsgivings are gifts that build and strengthen friendship. When you give, you recognize that you have been given much, and that you are deeply loved. If you overlook the love in the gifts you have received, you may find that your “return gifts” are more about guilt and repayment than about friendship. This is why “God loves a cheerful giver”, because the Lord is more concerned about the joy of friendship than about extracting dollars.
